Intro

Use this investment return calculator to estimate net gain or loss, total return, and annualized return after income and fees.

What this calculator does

Enter the original amount invested, ending or sale value, dividends or income, total fees, and holding period. The result shows net profit or loss, total return percentage, and annualized return when a holding period is provided.

How it works

Net proceeds are ending value + income - fees. Net gain is net proceeds - amount invested. Total return is net gain / amount invested. If the period is above zero, annualized return uses the CAGR formula.

Example calculation

If you invest 10,000, sell for 12,500, receive 300 in dividends, and pay 25 in fees, net proceeds are 12,775. Net gain is 2,775 and total return is 27.75%.

How to use the result

Use the result to compare realized or hypothetical scenarios. Check whether income and fees are included consistently before comparing two investments. The estimate does not replace regulated financial, tax, or investment advice.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Taxes, inflation, bid/ask spread, and currency movement are not included unless entered through fees.
  • It treats income as received during the holding period but does not reinvest it.
  • Annualized return is only shown when the holding period is greater than zero.

FAQs

  • Use sale value for closed investments and current value for open investments.
  • Put dividends, interest, or distributions in the income field.
  • Put broker commissions, platform costs, or other explicit costs in total fees.
