Whole cartons to buy Enter values to calculate.
Your result explanation will appear here.

Use actual supplier coverage and an appropriate entered waste allowance. Price applies to all purchased cartons or purchased area. Flooring type/layout do not change allowance automatically. No installation, tax, delivery, accessories or carpet-roll layout.

Intro

Use this flooring calculator to work out how many whole cartons to buy from your measured floor area, chosen waste allowance and actual coverage per carton. Compare measured, required and purchased coverage, then estimate material cost from a price per carton or per area unit.

What this calculator does

Enter a rectangular room's length and width, or choose known measured floor area for an irregular room or several rooms. Add only non-overlapping areas. Use the Square Footage & Room Area Calculator if you need to measure several rectangular sections first.

Choose decimal feet/square feet or meters/square meters. Enter feet and inches as decimal feet: 12 ft 6 in = 12.5 ft, not 12.6 ft. Changing measurement units reinterprets entered numbers rather than converting them. Carton coverage and area-price units have independent selectors, so a square-meter carton can be used with a floor measured in feet.

LVP/vinyl plank, laminate and hardwood use the same area-to-carton arithmetic. Flooring type and straight, diagonal or herringbone layout are context fields; they do not silently set coverage or waste. Enter the chosen product's carton coverage and an allowance appropriate to your actual layout and supplier guidance. The default 10% allowance and 23.5 sq ft coverage are editable illustrations, not universal recommendations.

How it works

Measured area = length × width. Required coverage = measured area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). Whole cartons = required coverage ÷ carton coverage, rounded up.

Convert both areas into the same units before dividing. Purchased coverage = whole cartons × coverage per carton. Surplus beyond the requirement = purchased coverage − required coverage. That surplus is separate from the waste allowance you already included.

For a carton price, cost = whole cartons × price per carton. For an area price, cost = full purchased coverage × price per area unit. Pricing the required area alone would omit material bought because of carton rounding. Keep full precision until the whole-carton decision. The tool uses exact decimal fractions for that decision, so an exact ten-carton requirement stays ten and a genuine fraction above ten becomes eleven.

One square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square meter using the international foot. Displayed area figures are rounded; carton rounding uses the entered numerical values and exact unit factor.

Example calculation

A 12 × 10 ft room, an illustrative 10% allowance and a chosen carton covering 23.5 sq ft gives:

StepCalculationResult
Measure the floor12 × 10120 sq ft
Add allowance120 × 1.10132 sq ft
Divide by carton coverage132 ÷ 23.5About 5.617 cartons
Round upwardRound 5.617 up6 cartons
Purchased coverage6 × 23.5141 sq ft
Surplus beyond requirement141 − 1329 sq ft

Try the six-carton example.

This matches the planned flooring buying-guide example. Six cartons is the purchase quantity; 132 sq ft is the requirement before whole-carton rounding. Coverage is user-supplied, not a claim that every flooring product has this carton size.

Price per square foot

For the same example, a quoted $3 per square foot applies to 141 sq ft purchased, giving 141 × $3 = $423. Pricing only the 132 sq ft requirement would give $396 and omit the extra purchased coverage. A carton quote should instead be entered in carton-price mode.

Try the purchased-area cost example.

Feet and inches measurement example

A room 12 ft 6 in by 10 ft 3 in is 12.5 × 10.25 = 128.125 sq ft. With 10% allowance it requires 140.9375 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per carton, 140.9375 ÷ 20 = 7.046875, so buy 8 cartons, providing 160 sq ft. Surplus beyond the requirement is 19.0625 sq ft.

Try the feet-and-inches floor example.

Exact carton boundary

A known 100 sq ft floor with 10% allowance requires 110 sq ft. At 11 sq ft per carton, 110 ÷ 11 = exactly 10 cartons. There is no carton-rounding surplus. If the actual requirement is above 110 sq ft, a further carton may be necessary; do not round your measurements down to reach a cheaper order.

Try the exact-carton boundary example.

Metric measurements and carton price

A 4 × 3 m room is 12 sq m. With 10% allowance it needs 13.2 sq m. At a measured product coverage of 2.2 sq m per carton, 13.2 ÷ 2.2 = 6 cartons. At $40 per carton, 6 × $40 = $240. Purchased coverage is 13.2 sq m with no additional carton-rounding surplus.

How to use the result

Use the whole-carton quantity as an area-based planning estimate, then verify the actual product coverage, layout, cutting losses and supplier ordering rules. Staggered joints, diagonal cuts, patterned installation, damaged boards or retained spare material can affect the allowance you choose. The calculator does not design a plank layout or decide the correct allowance.

For several rooms, sum their measured areas before applying one allowance. Do not add a second allowance to an already-adjusted room-area result. Keep different products or carton coverages in separate calculations. Use the Wall Area Calculator for walls and openings rather than treating floor area as wall area.

The estimated cost is material-only. Installation, removal/disposal, delivery, sales tax, underlay, adhesives, trims and transitions are excluded. A quoted minimum order, pallet rounding, mixed box sizes or separate accessories need additional supplier checks. Actual carton coverage and manufacturer/installer guidance override these illustrative inputs.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Room mode assumes one rectangular floor. Use supplied area for independently measured irregular or multiple-room totals.
  • One product and one carton coverage apply per calculation. Coverage must be positive and expressed in the selected area unit.
  • Waste allowance is from 0% to 100%. Flooring type/layout do not change it automatically.
  • Whole cartons always round upward. The count must fit JavaScript's safe whole-number range; extreme or unreliable measurements produce an error.
  • Purchased coverage can exceed the requirement. The extra carton-rounding coverage is not a second recommended waste allowance or a guarantee that every offcut is reusable.
  • This tool does not calculate carpet roll width, seams, tiles, individual plank cutting, stair treads or structural quantities. Carpet-style planning remains a separate calculator scope.
  • Prices apply to the whole purchase and use the selected currency region. A zero price skips the estimate; a currency selector does not convert a supplier quote.
  • The diagram illustrates the quantity workflow. It is not a measured floor plan, cutting layout or representation of actual carton contents.

Sources and calculation review

Exact length and area conversions use the NIST international-foot conversion factors, checked on 16 October 2026. The example and boundary arithmetic is independently tested, including exact-decimal carton rounding. Coverage, allowance and price examples are user-controlled illustrations rather than sourced product defaults or current market quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Should I round the room area before calculating cartons?

Keep the full measurements and coverage values. Round the carton quantity upward only after adding your allowance and dividing by actual carton coverage. The displayed area precision does not change the calculator's carton decision.

Does choosing herringbone automatically add extra waste?

No. The layout field is context only. Enter an allowance suitable for the actual product and installation plan, using manufacturer or installer guidance.

Does a price per square foot apply to the required area or purchased area?

Purchased area. Whole cartons may contain more coverage than your adjusted requirement, and the estimate prices all of the material bought. Carton-price mode multiplies the whole-carton count by the carton price.

Can I combine different flooring products in one estimate?

No. Calculate each product separately using its own measured area, waste allowance, carton coverage and price. One shared coverage value cannot describe mixed carton sizes accurately.
