Earned ÷ possible × 100. Extra credit may exceed 100%. No inferred letter grade, GPA, pass threshold or weighted course grade.

Useful next checks

  • Change one input at a time to see how the answer moves.
  • Read the method below if you want the steps.

Use this test score percentage calculator to turn points or marks into a percentage. Enter points earned or points missed and the total possible. A score of 42 out of 50 is 84%; missing 3 points out of 50 gives 94%.

What this calculator does

The calculator shows the score percentage and a breakdown of points earned, possible and missed. Choose the entry method that matches the information you have. Fractional points are supported, and earned points above the stated total are shown as extra credit rather than capped at 100%.

This is a percentage score, not an automatic letter grade. Schools, courses and instructors can use different cutoffs, weighting and extra-credit policies. Check the actual syllabus before treating the result as a course grade or pass decision.

How to calculate a test percentage

  1. Choose Points earned if you know your awarded score, or Points missed if you know how many points were deducted.
  2. Enter that point value.
  3. Enter the positive total of points available.
  4. Read the percentage and check the point breakdown.

Use counts of questions only when every question carries the same number of points. If one question is worth 10 points and another is worth 2, their question counts do not represent equal weights. Enter the awarded points instead.

Score percentage formula

Score percentage = points earned ÷ points possible × 100.

In missed-points mode, the calculator first finds points earned = points possible − points missed. It then uses the same score formula.

The method is the part/whole percentage relationship described in Math Is Fun's percentage introduction. “Marks obtained divided by total marks” is the same arithmetic as “points earned divided by points possible.” The labels do not establish a particular national grading system.

Example: 42 points out of 50

Suppose a test has 50 possible points and you earn 42:

  • Score fraction = 42 ÷ 50 = 0.84.
  • Score percentage = 0.84 × 100 = 84%.
  • Points missed = 50 − 42 = 8.

That does not establish whether 84% is a B, a pass or another classification. Those decisions require the applicable grading policy.

Example: 3 points missed out of 50

Choose Points missed and enter 3, with 50 possible. Earned points are 50 − 3 = 47. The percentage is 47 ÷ 50 × 100 = 94%.

For fractional scoring, 17.5 points out of 20 gives 87.5%. If 55 earned points are recorded against a 50-point base, the result is 110%, with 5 points above total. Confirm that the base and extra-credit treatment match your instructor's rules.

Combining tests and weighted grades

Do not average percentages automatically when the totals differ. For two tests scored 8/10 and 45/50, pooling the points gives 53/60, or about 88.33%. The simple average of 80% and 90% is 85%, which instead gives both tests equal weight. Choose the method required by your course.

This calculator handles one supplied score and total at a time. It does not calculate weighted course grades, GPA or the final-exam score needed to reach a target. Use a weighted-grade tool when the course assigns category weights. The Average Calculator is suitable only when a simple arithmetic mean is the intended method.

Assumptions and limitations

Possible points must be greater than zero. Earned and missed points must be nonnegative; missed points cannot exceed the possible total. Earned points can exceed it for extra credit. Point inputs are limited to 10^15, with fractional values accepted. Inactive mode fields do not affect the result.

The displayed score normally rounds to two decimal places; very small or large results use scientific notation. The tool does not apply institution-specific rounding, grade curves or minimum passing scores. Extremely disproportionate values that exceed reliable numerical precision produce an error. Use fictional or nonidentifying inputs when sharing a saved scenario; recipients can read shared inputs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the percentage of marks?

Divide the marks earned by the total available marks and multiply by 100. For example, 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. Use the same marking basis for both numbers.

Can I enter the number of questions I got wrong?

Use Points missed and enter the missed-question count only if all questions have equal weight and the possible total is the question count. Otherwise enter the actual points lost and the total possible points.

Can the score be higher than 100%?

Yes. In Points earned mode, extra credit can make the earned score exceed the supplied base total. The calculator shows the resulting percentage and points above total; your instructor decides how that affects a course grade.

Does this percentage tell me my letter grade?

No. Letter-grade cutoffs, rounding, weighting and pass requirements depend on the course. This calculator reports the numerical percentage without assuming a grading scale.
